Keys to Increase Your Search Engine Ranking

When we are talking about search engine ranking, the first thing you need to think about is the market place. Many people ask themselves, how many keywords should I put in my anchor text? What is the keyword density that I should have on my page? Should I use 300 words on my copy or should I use 500 words? Can I use flash? How many keywords should I put in my alternate text? Etc...

Here is a general statement: magic numbers do not exist. The most important thing you can understand as a search engine optimization expert is the following: algorithms change. Just when you think you understand what is going to make you number one for a search phrase in a search engine, something could change, and you might have to spend months or years trying to find out the engineering of the algorithm again.

It is better not to try to reverse engineer the algorithm and do something much easier instead, observe your competitors. All you need to do is to understand what elements are your competitors using that are making them rank on the top positions.

Let's see what those things are:

- Number and quality of inbound links pointing to your site
- Keyword density
- Fresh content

The first thing to observe from your competitor's sites is their back link index. This means the number of sites that have a link pointing to their website. You can easily measure it by going to Google and type: "link://www.yourcompetitorssite.com". But it would be a mistake to do this only on Google, as Google discriminates sites much more than other search engines. Yahoo and MSN are much more accurate for measuring the back link index.

Part of the observation should be not only what the links say, but where the links come from. Think on what is the category where those links come from. If you start to see a recurring pattern, you should start actively searching for links coming from that category.

Some marketers use special software for robotic content creation. They generate thousands of pages with links pointing to their sites. This practice can be dangerous, as Google may penalize unnatural linking or violations of their terms of service. And what happens is that those links do not look natural. One day one site may have 50 links and the following day have 2.050 links, which all say the same thing and come from the same IP address.

If you understand how to observe, this will never happen to you. You will learn how to look at your competitors, and observe how they are getting linked to.

The second thing you need to observe is the keyword density of your competitors. How many times should we repeat our main keyword? In which part of the web page should our main keywords be mentioned? There is no magic number, again it's all about observing and measuring against your competitors. But what should we measure?

- Meta tags
- Alt tags
- Titles
- Names of the images on the page
- Highlights: h1, h2, h3...
- Frequency and position of the keywords on the body text

Each one of these items should be measured independently. There are tools to run keyword density against your competitors. If you run them against the top 3 or 5 sites, you may start to understand the secrets of top rankings.

Again, your keyword density needs to look natural; otherwise you may fail in over optimization. This is when you use keywords too often or too early. If you look unnatural, your page ranks will suffer as a result.

The key to success is to understand what Google likes about their top 5 pages, and to apply this to your own website promotion.

The last thing to observe is how much fresh content do the top sites have. If they have many articles and they are continuously adding new content to their sites, then it is clear that the search engines like content and are ranking better those sites which have more and more updated information.

People that surf the web are usually searching for information, so content is the "fuel" of internet traffic. If you want to attract many potential customers to your site, then you need to make sure that you provide enough content which is relevant to their interests.

Downsizing Sucks! I have been there and I Know!

You are working at your family welding business during the day, and then go to your second job at night. You are 50-some years old, working as a cashier at Target. You always said that if you are 40 years old and have a career that requires you to wear a name tag, then to just shoot you!

Not that there is anything wrong with working at Target or wearing a name tag or working the family business. Those are all honest jobs. It is just that after 20 years with your previous company, and with your education and expertise, you had not exactly planned on ramping up to your golden years asking customers if they would like to save ten percent on their purchase by opening a store credit card.

You heard rumblings about the company folding. But as far as you knew, the numbers were good. At least they were good. Then competition took over and the owners decided it was a good time to bow out gracefully. You were hoping you were not going to be one of the countless main wage earners to get let go. But sadly, you were. Unemployment ran out. You sent out literally hundreds of resumes and still nothing. Your spirits are down, you are frustrated (that is an understatement) and you even had to humble yourself to get some help from a local food pantry.

You have done all the online courses; you have tirelessly pounded the pavement and scoured the classified ads. You have even hit up all the online sources to jobs such as www.monster.com, www.usajobs.com, hotjobs.yahoo.com, and about 800 other job boards that you regularly surf. If one more person tells you that a door closes and a window opens or that good things come to those who wait, you think you are going to vomit.

You have a family counting on you; so now what? For starters, keep plugging along. Keep on keeping on. You know a job is not going to fall from the sky, so you need to just accept that your job right now is finding a job. You are working and you are working harder than most at this task.

More importantly you need to keep a positive outlook. Yes that is easier said than done. But if you can not control the circumstances you can control your attitude toward it. You can either look at downsizing as an opportunity to do something different or to learn something new; or you can view it by accepting that you have been dealt a bad hand of cards and now all you can do is play it out. Do not view yourself as a victim. No good will come from that attitude.

You would not have advanced nor had the longevity that you did in your former career had it not been for your wherewithal and internal drive. You need to find that strength again. If you are still having a pity party, it is time to get over it. If you have sent out that many resumes and exhausted what you believe to be all your leads and you are still bitter and feeling sorry for yourself, it is time to reevaluate. If you have not already accepted a job that you are overqualified for and underpaid, then it is time you did.

Pride can be our biggest downfall. Working a family business that you never wanted to, or working nights at the concession stand may not be what you envisioned for yourself. View it as temporary. View it as a paycheck. View it as an opportunity to network with people you would have never had the opportunity to cross paths. Maybe your next customer could be a business owner that you have been attempting to get an interview with.

As for the people who give you clich and excuses; know that they mean well. People who have not been a mile in your shoes do not understand it. They do not know what to say. Remember downsizing sucks, but it may be forcing you into a new opportunity that you will really love. Make the best of it, remember your not alone, I and many other have beeen there too.

This Life Is a Test -- It Is Only a Test!

Do you remember the old Emergency Broadcast Announcement, the one with the horrible beeping sound that tells you "had this been an actual emergency, you would have been instructed where to go and..."

A few years ago, there was something similar making the rounds on the Internet. It went something like this. "This life is a test. It is only a test. Had this been an actual life, you would have received instructions on where to go and what to do..."

It would be nice if life came with instructions on where to go and what to do. But it does not.

And yet, so many people go through life as if they're waiting for instructions, or for their "real" life to begin. You will hear people say things like "When I lose 20 pounds, I am going to..." or, "When I have got enough money, then I am going to..." It is as if they've put their life on hold, waiting for everything to be perfect, before they start actually living it!

But this life is not a test, or a rehearsal, or a game. You do not get a "do over" when it is finished. This is it.

Do not waste another minute of your life! Instead of waiting until things are perfect, or for "someday" to arrive, start enjoying yourself now!

Not sure what to do?

Make a "What I want to do Before I die" list. When you're starting your list, it does not matter how wild and crazy your dreams are! So if you have always wanted to take up scuba diving, or you want to make a million dollars or even sing in front 10,000 people -- write it down. Think about everything that you really want -- the things that would make you feel special or loved, or important. The things you have been meaning to get around to doing, but for one reason or another, just have not done. The secret dreams that have been hiding in a tiny corner of your heart.

The important thing here is figure out exactly what it is you WANT. Writing the things down, gives them form and shape and power.

After you have written them down, prioritize the list. What things are on that list that are the most important to you? If you found out that you were going to die next year, or next week, or tomorrow, what would you want to do before it happens?

Do not be surprised if your list is very long. You have probably been denying yourself for a while now, because "life" got in the way of "living." If you are like most people, you will find there are some things on your list that are very simple, and easy to do. Maybe you like feeling spoiled by having your first cup of coffee in bed every morning. Or maybe you only use "company" dishes during special occasions from grandma, because you love them. Or maybe your list includes things like telling the people you love that they matter to you.

Whatever is on your list, whatever dreams and desires are in your heart, what are you waiting for? Set your alarm fifteen minutes earlier, and enjoy your coffee in bed. If you want to learn to salsa dance, but you're waiting until you lose fifteen pounds -- remember that salsa dancing is a great form of exercise -- and just do it!

When you give yourself permission to start living your life, amazing things start to happen! You may find yourself going through a "lucky" streak. Opportunity starts knocking at your door on a regular basis. And you may even find that the stress and strain you were under has lifted. Things look brighter, and you feel happier.

Do not throw your list away -- in fact, keep it handy and add to it as you think of new dreams, new goals. Because as you begin to live the life you were meant to live -- a life that is worth living -- you may just find that you need a new sheet of paper!

Networking Your Way To Online Success!

Forums, groups, boards, and loops; they are all synonymous for online locations facilitating online networking. Some are entirely public, where everyone and anyone can click to the URL, read the messages and if they have no interest in contributing, they can just lurk. Some require active participation and others require registration before members can participate. These online forums, groups, boards or loops are different from paid membership sites in that there is no cost to network at these websites.

Some are active, some are sleepy. Some are strictly for business related topics; some allow more OT (Off Topics) and social interaction. There are forums for every imaginable topic: Entrepreneurs, International business, Health related fields, Technology, Copywriters, Web Designers, Work at Home Moms, Programmers, Finance, Ebay, Job Seekers, Internet Marketing, Writers, Inventors and Virtual Assistants, just to barely scratch the surface of what’s out there on the World Wide Web.

Time management skills need to be paramount when participating in online forums. You can very easily get swallowed up and spend hours and hours online networking with others who have online businesses, yet you miss real opportunities to get some productive work done!

From a business standpoint, there are two areas you should consider before participating in a loop. It is always good to have a network of like-minded business people. If you are a web designer, hang out with other designers. You can help and support each other. If you are just starting out, you can learn from the pros.

Do not get stuck though, just hanging out with your own kind. You are not going to be very successful trying to promote your design services to other designers. This is where balance comes in. Pop into the boards, check new posts of interest, ask or answer questions, then get out. Then move onto groups who need your services or products. Who is your target market and where do they hang out? Go there. Word of caution: Do not go to these forums with the sole purpose of SPAMMING the group. You will be tossed out on your ear quicker than you can blink if that is your sole purpose. People like to do business with people they know and trust or at the very minimum have at least heard of.

If you are trying to sell your curriculum to a group of home school parents and you just pop in, spew your sales rap all over the boards then expect any sort of return, you are missing the point of online networking. It is networking not advertising. You need to build a rapport with your other loopies. Then if a need arises and they know one of their own fellow networkers has that special skill or product, guess who they will call first? You hope it is YOU.
